Blackhorse Farm

Carved out of an 11,000 acre parcel originally belonging to William Penn, the 47 acres of Black Horse Farm have been revived as a juxtaposition of historic and modern elements. Once a working horse farm, the former Center City dwellers have begun a new chapter of their lives in this rural community, with the goal of reviving the farm while remaining in close proximity to Philadelphia.

“(Moto) expertly maintained the farmhouse feeling while creating a contemporary home.”

The historic stone farmhouse has been reinvented for modern living, preserving the original character, while enhancing the spaces for family gatherings. This included opening up the kitchen as a double height space by removing a second-floor bedroom and restructuring the exterior wall to accommodate a series of glass doors that open the space directly to the expansive landscape. The primary bed and bath have been reconfigured and provide equally impressive views to the site. An adjacent stone building, once a home for animals, has been revived as a guest house.

A third phase of work, which will include a 3,500sf multipurpose agricultural building with space for farm equipment, a honey extraction operation, and an office, is currently in construction.

“The design opens the house up to the beautiful pastoral views.”
