From political and socio-economic conflict, to a seemingly endless assault from Mother Nature, the people of Haiti have endured a past that would test the resolve of any culture. Over its long history, this proud nation has been tested time and again, proving that against all adversity, the human spirit can overcome. This cultural strength became the inspiration in the Woven Tree proposal for a new Cathedral. The tree, symbolic of the nation’s hope and perseverance, is often expressed in its art. This emblem of the human spirit became the catalyst, shifting from the traditional archetypal style of cathedrals to one that resonates with Haitian culture and tradition. The symbolic tree form is abstracted into a canopy shelter, capturing the spirit of its iconic image.
