Society Hill

The Society Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia was reborn in the 1950s and 60s, transforming the then blighted historic district into one of the most significant heritage districts in the country. As part of this transformation, 18th and 19th century rowhomes were revived and modern rowhomes were designed and constructed to complement the cadence of the neighborhood, but be representative of their own time and place. This residence is an example of such a development. Designed by Louis Sauer and built in 1968, the home suffered several unfortunate renovations over the last 40 years, but the new owners could recognize its potential and turned to Moto to revive the interior for contemporary living.

As a first step, the spatial organization of the home was re-conceived to connect the volume of spaces. As a major move, the kitchen was shifted to the first floor of the home, opening it up and connecting the interior to the private landscape. Along with the complete interior renovation, Moto guided the project through a Historic Commission review, necessary due to its context in the Society Hill Historic District.
