Tidewaters

It was the lush, wooded community and proximity to the ocean that drew the owners to this seaside town, just north of Rehoboth Beach in Delaware. The fact that the home they found had been long neglected and poorly renovated over the last 50+ years didn’t deter them from seeing its potential. After two previously successful projects with the clients – designing their home in Society Hill and their office in Center City – we quickly shared a vision for a thoughtful and thorough revival of the midcentury home.

“...it is rare to find others as invested as we are as owners, but that’s what we’ve found in Moto.”

With the intention of restoring the original character of the residence, while updating the floorplan to accommodate a more modern and open series of spaces, the home was stripped back to the bare elements, removing interior walls and exterior cladding. The interior was reconfigured to consolidate several smaller rooms, while putting the focus back on the interior/exterior relationship intended of the original design. The exterior was reclad in wood siding, with new windows, and careful landscaping to protect the 200+ year old Oak trees on the site.

The material palette was carefully selected to be in keeping with the original character of the residence and create warm, vibrant spaces. For the exterior siding, a honey toned Alaskan cedar board and batten was selected, while red oak plank was used for both the floors and ceilings on the interior to focus views back out to the landscape. These warm wood tones were paired with the charcoal millwork and stair volume to provide a balance of crisp modernism.

“The natural landscape is staggeringly beautiful – Moto found a way to reconnect the interior spaces to the site.”
